Regression tests get around a lot of these drawbacks: they cover edge cases that have already been shown to have been overlooked in the past; and they're not unnecessarily brittle or testing things that might legitimately change because they're testing something that we know someone has relied on in the past. They can still end up platform (or more generally, environment) specific, though.
