As another example, checkout Pepakura for Windows. I've used OpenSCAD to design simple 3D models and then used Pepakura to unfold them into flat designs. Manually cutting the designs is slow painstaking work. I eventually purchased a Cricut to cut the pieces out, but it's ability to cut shapes to a very specific scale is lacking. So, I find myself not having created very much.
