Private file access between computers. Even in 2020 it appears that building a connection between machines (macOS, Linux and Windows) requires a miracle if you don't like to share everything with cloud providers.
cryo file mangager is an attempt to get rid of the hassle:

- betimsl 6y agoDon't forget to check https://upspin.io/ https://upspin.io/ out :)
- cryo 6y agoIndeed I'd like to add https://onionshare.org https://onionshare.org which also provides a non cloud solution to share files privatly.
- isaacimagine 6y agoThere's also syncthing: https://syncthing.net/ https://syncthing.net/.
- genuinebyte 6y agoI've recently setup Syncthing and it worked great. I'd appreciate if it allowed me to cut out all relays and just connect directly to my servers, but maybe I just haven't found out how to do that yet.
- cryo 6y agoYou can run your own relay servers. https://docs.syncthing.net/users/strelaysrv.html https://docs.syncthing.net/users/strelaysrv.html
- dcow 6y agoCheck out https://magic-wormhole.readthedocs.io/en/latest/ https://magic-wormhole.readthedocs.io/en/latest/ which is basically just a tool to help people do password authenticated key exchange when establishing ephemeral connections.
- a1369209993 6y ago> building a connection between machines (macOS, Linux and Windows) requires a miracle if you don't like to share everything with cloud providers. Technically bittorrent + any file encryption format works fine, although it's not something a nontechnical user would ever figure out without either step-by-step instructions or said miracle.
- caymanjim 6y agoIn addition to the other suggestions, you can run Nextcloud on any machine you control and sync to computers, mobile devices, etc. This is a well-solved problem.
- cryo 6y agoIt is, but only for technical skilled people. It's not that simple to setup and understand for regular 'Dropbox' users.
- drusepth 6y agoI recently used magic-wormhole [1] for this. It was a 1-line command that gave me a keyphrase that I told to someone else. They typed the same command on their end, put in the keyphrase, and received my file. No IPs, no forwarding ports or files. It was a magical experience and Just Worked.
