Was by chance this “retreat” in Mexico psychedelic related? Your story fits a fact pattern to me, which is abstaining from caffeine prior (because caffeine apparently can ‘get in the way’ of the ‘chemical experience’) and the fact that you could easily change an ingrained habit once you’re back - which is kind of a hallmark of that type of experience too.
