As a member of the MySQL community who is not a native english speaker, I never payed attention to the terminology, it's all greek to me.
However, just one conversation (and I had more than one) with other members who are both people of color and native english speakers made me aware that the terminology negatively affects their work life, as you use these commands (or read columns with these names, monitoring systems information, etc.) pretty much on a daily basis. For most of them , the problem is the use of master and slave, just master alone doesn't seem bad if used with, e.g., replica. I can relate to that too, as there are demeaning terms used to represent "my" people that would annoy me or eventually bring me down if I had to use them in my work life. Say I had to use a system where worker processes where called "Sudacas", which is a derogatory term for south american migrants in some parts of Europe. Suddenly "stop sudaca", or "change master(owner) to" would probably bring me down.
So while I don't think for a second this is solving racism, and I also think this is just a corporation doing what they think will make them look better in the public, I know for a fact this will improve the work environment for real people that I know, and that's good enough for me.
