This is not how things were. Maybe a few micro-actions were like that. Like turn on a C64. But then it was doing nothing sitting there.
Let me tell you my experience that's etched in my memory.
While learning image processing, we were suppose to implement a low pass filter in a 512x512 color image. That's a 1MB image.
It took 20 minutes to make a modification of a single character. 20 minutes to compile the (C) program. And 20 minutes to run the program.
The VAX we had in 1988 had 4 MB of RAM. We were 3 teams going through the cycle. So the machine was constantly swapping.
Today it will take me less then a few seconds to change one character in my program, compile it and then run it.
