>Take-home coding assignment
That's a big No! No way I'm gonna spend my days doing someone's work for free.
- mstrem 6y agoI feel this is a generalisation. A lot of coding assignments are unrelated to the actual work and have no value to the potential employer besides assessing skills.
- mesaframe 6y agoThat still doesn't justify wasting someone's time.
- nwsm 6y agoYou think they are intentionally wasting candidates' time in a way that does not benefit them at all?
- mesaframe 6y agoThey are being selfish I'd say. Trying to save their time on the basis of projects in the meantime wasting interviewee's time.
- bri3d 6y agoI strongly doubt the take-home assignment is project code - not only would that be a legal minefield, but they couldn't compare across candidates. It's probably a standardized test. I personally vastly prefer these interviews to in-person whiteboard trivia sessions.
- mesaframe 6y agoBy project I mean any project. Related to work or not.
- valand 6y agoYour comment is not helpful and useful. There is no proof that you are doing someone's work by partaking in take-home coding assignment. These postings are targeted to the rest of HN community who think that hiring process must be fair for all party. Preparing to be downvoted
- reidjs 6y agoI love that op shared their interview process though, I hope this becomes a new normal instead of it being a mystery.
- Gabriel_Martin 6y agoYou'd rather do a whiteboard? If the project isn't related to their product I don't see a problem.
- mesaframe 6y agoI'd rather ask them to look at my resume and ask me questions based on it. Also, Yes, I'll whiteboard instead of that.
- bri3d 6y agoCounterpoint: I'd rather waste time on my own schedule doing a coding assignment that looks at least somewhat similar to the actual work I'd be doing. The alternative seems to be to waste a week studying irrelevant algorithms questions and then a day doing fixed-schedule whiteboard interviews.
- tootie 6y agoThoughtWorks is a very reputable company that does serious work. Martin Fowler is the chief scientist. They aren't running a scam.
