Lua + LuaJIT has been a great combination when it comes to Kong[1] which I believe is the largest open source OpenResty application. Not only we can leverage the underlying NGINX networking primitives for fast non blocking IO, we can also hook into each request and response via Lua to provide APIM functionality and run the whole thing on the piece of art that is LuaJIT[2] created by the legendary Mike Pall. I have to admit it does have its quirks (Lua lists have a base index of 1 instead of 0), but so far it's been phenomenal. As far as I know, Cloudflare is also leveraging the same stack (OpenResty) for their global CDN. Disclaimer: I am a Kong contributor.
