Both VHDL and SQL use -- for comments, so I'm kinda surprised that this us the first time you've seen this style.

  Haskell as well, I think of -- as 'standard', along with /* // and #. Lisp's ; is narrowly my favourite, but I suspect that's more because I like lisps than any inherent virtue...

  It's not the -- it's the --[[ that I find weird.
