Seems like they're running a chrome process controlled via the automation APIs.

  not exactly, we're using a library that reverse engineered the Whatsapp Web api: https://github.com/Rhymen/go-whatsapp https://github.com/Rhymen/go-whatsapp. I haven't had any problems with the API and I've been using it for a year straight.
