There's a difference between hate speech occasionally being found in a subreddit and a subreddit existing principally as a platform for hate speech. the_donald was unambiguously the latter.
- 9HZZRfNlpR 6y agoBy definition there's tons of hate speech against white males on reddit but Americans have invented these insane theories x can't be racist because you need power etc. It's just made up words to justify your own prejudice and feel yourself better about it.
- pyronik19 6y agoWhen you define any speech that doesn't parrot left wing talking points as "hate speech" I can see how you could come to that conclusion.
- throwmehaweh 6y agoThis is not true at all. I see comments like this and wonder if the person even ventured to TD, interacted in the comments, or just simply contrived such a story. I don't doubt that there were bad actors in TD, as there are in r/politics and every other political community, but having intermittently visited the sub since inception, I almost never saw anything remotely close to "hate speech" (whatever that is). Most of the comments were from regular people that support the President, and rightfully were tired of the hypocrisy coming from the other side. Don't forget that TD was a target from day one, and even exposed the CEO Steve Huffman manipulating comments on it. What message did that send?
- NE2z2T9qi 6y agoEverytime I saw a news article about the_Donald being an irredeemable den of vitriol and hate--and I actually went to check it out to see if the claims were true--all the top posts were just mildly edgy memes, over-the-top bragging about presidential accomplishments, and some conspiratorial claims which seemed repeated half ironically. Could it be that you're just much more easily offended than other people?
- psychometry 6y agoNo, it's just that you didn't click through to any of the comments...
- NE2z2T9qi 6y agoSo, in order to be offended by the_Donald, I had to actively go searching for reasons to be offended? I get it. It was a subreddit that said a lot of rude things. Stand up comedians also say rude things. A lot of political commentators say rude things. For example, liberal-leaning people calling Republicans "Nazis" or calling Trump "Hitler" seems unbelievably hateful and offensive. Must we "de-platform" all of these hate-mongers? Let's stop all the banning and the pearl-clutching.
