Building things to last has a really high cost and is usually not worth it.
The vast majority of the buildings and infrastructure humans have constructed have been torn down, completely rebuilt or abandoned. What remains are usually extremely expensive monuments to religon, culture or governmental constructions.
Most software is not worth to preserve the same way most buildings are not worth to preserve (except for perhaps the aesthetically pleasing facade).
