I think large companies definitely have a lot to gain by building good software designed to last, and the best companies do place value in doing things right (I worked in a couple of monopolistic giants). Especially infrastructure has to be designed to last since they take a long time to build in the first place. If you value craftsmanship, infrastructure teams in large companies are probably a good place to be.
