American Affairs Journal is a relatively recent publication that’s been somewhat pro-Trump, at least pro-Trumpism. James McElroy also often writes in American Conservative.
I don’t believe this belongs on Hacker News.
- jonstewart 6y agoDownvote to oblivion, but highfalutin essays in neocon journals keep showing up here on HN with some regularity, particularly on the weekends. I can’t remember the last time I saw something from Jacobin or Mother Jones, and certainly not an essay this overtly political. It’s all too easy to nod along as you read this sort of thing, but then to become more cynical when you consider the source, the underlying motivations, and the larger body of work into which it fits and associates.
- AnimalMuppet 6y agoYou don't seem to be paying attention. I see borderline Marxist stuff here rather regularly.
- Apocryphon 6y agoPlease cite.
- non-entity 6y agoTheres a high chance they'll think marxism is "when the government does stuff" or some similar nonsense and will cite some mildly socdem material.
- AnimalMuppet 6y agoSorry, I can't off the top of my head. I was reading one on Friday, though, that was... some guy's unique Marxist perspective on... the global south, if I recall correctly. That wasn't borderline Marxist, that was openly, unapologetically Marxist. But again, no, I can't give you a cite. It was on "new" about 48 hours ago, plus or minus several hours. I'm pretty sure I found that on "new", though, rather than on the front page. If front page appearances are your metric, then left stuff may be rather rare.
- ntsplnkv2 6y agoSV is largely white and male, with a lot of strange crossover - but mainly, white, and male, Trump's biggest supporting demographic. There is also this demographic of "bro-science" white males, listening to Joe Rogan, Jordan Peterson, Ben Shapiro, these "intellectual" type conservatives, and believe pretty much anything they hear out of them. This article is inline with that - and because it is "high-brow", it particularly works on here, unlike, say, a Rush Limbaugh soundbite. Having said that, I liked the article. It makes some good points - I think there is dissatisfaction in general with our current time, from both sides. I think both are trying to identify that problem, and it's important to see how it is viewed from both sides. There's just a certain, "schizophrenia," of our time right now, which I think the article highlights.
- AnimalMuppet 6y agoNo matter the value of the actual article, it's so tainted by Trump that it can't possibly belong on HN? That seems to be your standard, and that seems a very narrow-minded one.
- jonstewart 6y agoI think we can take for granted that Trumpism exists somewhere in the political sphere of authoritarianism. This is Hacker News; the hacker ethic is fundamentally anti-authoritarian. So, yes, I believe Trumpist political articles—this one ends by drawing a clear analogy between Trump and the more appealing class of roguish small business owners (which Trump never was, having inherited his money)—particularly insidious ones that use a lot of words to put an intellectual veneer on Trumpism, do not at all belong on Hacker News.
- ThrowawayR2 6y ago> "the hacker ethic is fundamentally anti-authoritarian" The old guard who believed in the hacker ethic has long ago faded into irrelevance. I am sorry to say that technology is now run by the mundanes (yes, even the bulk of software developers) and the new hacker ethic seems to be "greed is good".
- Gollapalli 6y agoAmerican Affairs is best described as post-liberal. The authors are as likely to have been former marxists as they are to be former paleocons.
