This seems to be more a broadcasting of the author's values than anything else; the part of it which is objective observation is IMHO obvious. I think there is an appropriate generic response to critiques like this, which is that people are generally doing their best, and they may have different motivations for getting into the field than you do, and this diversity is a good thing. Probably every nascent science has its Faradays and Maxwells, who complement one another.
