VC is fundamentally a power/money alliance which exists to further the allies' interests. Capitalism ideology says that it turns out that this is fairly optimal for consumers, given competitive forces to keep it checked and balanced. But this balance is only healthy to the extent that the homeostasis can be maintained. Unconstrained growth (prioritized above all else and with disregard for externalities) is less like homeostasis and more like cancer ("Wall Street: As long as someone wants to buy this [collateralized debt obligation], we’re good.")
