What are bars and pubs doing to stop the telling of untruths in their environments? Nothing and nobody is pressuring them to do so.
Why is Facebook different because it's on the Internet?
- hairofadog 6y agoThere's a question of scale and context. If there was a bar that could (a) fit two billion people into it, (b) work hard to ensure they're the only bar in the world, (c) allow powerful political groups or even foreign countries to (d) use misinformation to sow conflict and violence in a way that was (e) invisible to any one individual in the bar, well in that case I would probably be wondering what was going to be done about this problem. However, I wouldn't trust the owners of the bar to do anything about it.
- loktarogar 6y agoThis argument is the same one used in the assault rifle ban debate. It's a false equivalency. You can kill people far more easily with an assault rifle than a handgun. You can spread deliberate misinformation far more easily, quickly and widely on social media than in a bar.
- scollet 6y agoI mean, it's probably best not to talk politics at a bar in the first place.
