What this man did was a significant benefit to humanity, but an embarrassment to the US. Most American leaders probably wouldn't refute that on an individual level, but would be risking their political careers to openly admit it. Dropping charges entirely would send the wrong signal to the world. Hopefully the UK just holds him indefinitely and treats him with respect. A US trial would turn into a political shitshow.
