This is exactly what I have instituted for my team. I think that actually is Gitlab Flow though. If you don't use the optional parts of Gitlab Flow like a production branch, what you are left with is feature branches merged to master, and then release tags made from master. The only difference is that both of us don't make the release branch unless it's necessary, we just make the tag.
