The GPL has done a lot of good, but I think it is rather hobbled by being tied so intimately to the concept of 'linking', which has a very clear technical meaning when talking about C/C++, but becomes a lot fuzzier when applied to other languages. This was fine back when all software was written in C/C++... except that was of course never the case.
