I believe Apple has faced multiple class action lawsuits over this type of issue.
Here is the pretty broad result of one:
"Friday’s settlement covers U.S. owners of the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, 7, 7Plus or SE that ran the iOS 10.2.1 or later operating system. It also covers U.S. owners of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus that ran iOS 11.2 or later before Dec. 21, 2017.
Consumers contended that their phones’ performance suffered after they installed Apple software updates. They said this misled them into believing their phones were near the end of their lifecycles, requiring replacements or new batteries."

- scarface74 6y agoSo in response to a post saying that “Apple never got sued for slowing down iPads”, you post another link where they got sued for slowing down a number of iPhones.
- xigency 6y agoYes, because your original argument was with someone who said their iPad was slower after a software update. This is evidence that hundreds of people had iOS devices slow down noticeably after an update and Apple decided to pay them to remove the case from court. As a software developer I am aware of how adding features to an operating system to can indeed slow it down on existing hardware or raise the level of what the minimum specs are. Many of those issues would affect both iPads and iPhones. I understand that you're trying to 'debunk' something here but the honest truth is that some people have had bad experiences with Apple products.
- scarface74 6y agoNo “Words Mean Things”. The original poster said Apple got sued for slowing down iPads. I said one sentence. Apple never got sued for slowing down the iPad. He claimed that Apple got sued that wasn’t the case. I never said that iPads didn’t slow down because of iOS updates. My first gen iPad became very unstable because of iOS 5. I didn’t buy a new iPad until 2017. So how are two citations about Apple getting sued for slowing down iPhones relevant? Not only that, the lawsuits were because Apple slowed down phones when batteries got old. The slowdowns on the phones when Apple was sued were caused by the battery not the OS. The iPad has never had the power management features that the iPhone has for old batteries.
- xigency 6y ago> Apple never got sued for slowing down the iPad. I agree. > So how are two citations about Apple getting sued for slowing down iPhones relevant? This is proof that iOS devices like the iPad and the iPhone can be slower after an Apple software update. As the case was settled without Apple admitting any wrongdoing, we can only hypothesize about the performance issue. I agree that in the case of iPhones battery management is a factor in performance throttling. I also suggest that added features in later iOS updates will slow the device down. Some of the most obvious examples of this are when they have improved their UI and rendering or added additional services that run in the background. If you really believe that an iPad 2 running iOS 4.3 would have the same performance when it is running iOS 9.3 then I would recommend you buy it as your next tablet.
- scarface74 6y agoThe citations are proof of nothing related to OS upgrades. It’s true that iOS devices do slow down with newer operating systems, but the articles that were cited about lawsuits were about slowdowns on iPhones caused by battery management. The lawsuits were about Apple not informing users that they could have fixed the specific slowdown by buying new batteries. I’m not arguing that older devices don’t get slower with newer os’s. I’m arguing that the citations have nothing to do with OS upgrades and they have nothing to do with ipads.
- quijoteuniv 6y agoI am glad you drive for acuracy in posts, I did assume that the issue with slowing down was the same as the one they where fined for. I guess I will never know. The point of my posts is conveing a bad user experience, which you seem to have had yourself too, and posted several posts later. So the "sued" is not relevant anymore. we can agree on the slowing down/bad experience aspect :)
- scarface74 6y agoAnd I’m not trying to be not picky. If you had a 6s and you noticed a slow down. The answer could be buy a new battery and still be able to run iOS 14 decently when it comes out. If you had an iPad that was slow. The answer would never be “buy a new battery”.
