I live in Palo Alto - last weekend I cycled past some sort of art festival in downtown Los Altos.
There were hundreds of people packed together looking at and touching art.
There was a big sign that 'we'd get through this together'.
They're also opening up farmers markets.
I think we're going to see the number of cases rise again.
- jeffbee 6y agoFarmers' markets never closed here in Alameda County which is a lot more densely populated than Los Altos. I think the risk of transmitting respiratory diseases in the outdoors is wildly overstated. Also, people gotta eat.
- SomeoneFromCA 6y agoNah, it is not overstated. Last time I checked, Wuhan marke was outdoors.
- jeffbee 6y agoWhen did you check last? Nothing about the photographs I have seen of the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market suggests "outdoors".
- SomeoneFromCA 6y agoNo doors, roof only. I consider it outdoors. Anyways, in my country open markets get disenfected twice a week, and yet they still find infections through contact tracing, originated from the sellers at these markets.

- tingletech 6y agoFarmer's markets have been open the whole time in Alameda county.
- tylersmith 6y agoWhen people move from more isolation toward more interaction cases of all communicable diseases should rise so I think that's a safe assumption.
- spike021 6y ago>They're also opening up farmers markets. The one near me in downtown San Jose just re-opened a couple of weeks ago. I walked through to see what it was like. Not too bad, they require masks for patrons and also the people working the vendor stalls. Also, customers aren't allowed to touch produce at all and contactless payment is preferred. So all of that looked relatively decent. My issue was I would see patrons walking around or about to pay and they'd be lowering their mask to talk, not covering their nose with the mask, wearing their mask on their neck, etc. I'm not sure how to correct issues like that.
- chillacy 6y agoSupposedly if it's outside it's not as bad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6QwnzbRUyA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6QwnzbRUyA
- kpennell 6y agoGiven that there hasn't been a bump from the protests, it seems like outdoor spread is not super common.
- ping_pong 6y agoIncorrect, the bump we are seeing now looks like it perfectly correlates to the protest. The initial spread you would see in the beginning few weeks wouldn't be noticeable, but it's laying the seeds. It's about 4-6 weeks after we see the effects of those early sees from exponential growth.
