There's enough fuzz in the vote counts that no one would notice, and you wouldn't have any controversy on your hands.
- jaywalk 6y agoI can think of a few reasons to publicize this, but none of them have anything to do with avoiding controversy.
- tedajax 6y agoI don't think avoiding controversy should be the goal.
- psychometry 6y agoThe point is that the users who are upvoting this kind of content will stay on the site if they think their votes matter. Reddit clearly would rather they leave entirely, and this is a good way to encourage racists/misogynists/incels/whoever to find another platform.
- bradlys 6y agoIt happens for far left content as well. I don’t think it’s limited to hateful content. At least, that’s what I’ve read from the chapotraphouse subreddit. Example being upvoting some far left stuff in r/politics.
- jlawson 6y ago'Far-left content' and 'hateful content' are not mutually exclusive. Quite the opposite, really. It is amazing how people will redefine hating Trump supporters, men, white people, "the 1%", western civilization etc as somehow 'not hateful'. "My hate isn't hate, I just dislike things that are bad." Right.
- bradlys 6y ago> 'Far-left content' and 'hateful content' are not mutually exclusive. Quite the opposite, really. I wouldn't characterize far left content as hateful. Usually it expresses an intolerance for intolerance or hypocritical actions. > It is amazing how people will redefine hating Trump supporters, men, white people Is there even a point to you speaking here? You're like an incel on a women's forum. You've transitioned into a complete non-sequitur.
- zozbot234 6y ago> I wouldn't characterize far left content as hateful. You're not familiar with, e.g. tankies, I take it?
- bradlys 6y agoThe term has evolved over time. The people going by tankies now are likely not the same as decades ago. So, it's unclear what you think it is. https://www.reddit.com/r/ChapoTrapHouse/comments/hb0xep/wtf_are_tankies_lmao/ https://www.reddit.com/r/ChapoTrapHouse/comments/hb0xep/wtf_... https://www.reddit.com/r/ChapoTrapHouse/comments/hb0xep/wtf_are_tankies_lmao/fv6o42e/ https://www.reddit.com/r/ChapoTrapHouse/comments/hb0xep/wtf_...
- non-entity 6y agoTankie feels like it became a near useless term. Some well known liberal paper (maybe NYT?) published some article that insinuated that maybe US cold war era propaganda on the USSR wasnt nessicarily always true and someone linked it to me referring to it as a tankie article.
- Grue3 6y agoThey still defend indefensible things like Holodomor or Tiananmen Massacre.
- manigandham 6y agoHateful content is never clearly defined and it comes from both political extremes.
- manigandham 6y agoIt’s a good way to encourage any user at all to leave.
- psychometry 6y agoNope, I would use reddit even more if it meant a higher quality user experience, which the expulsion of those sorts of people would guarantee.
- finnthehuman 6y ago>I don't understand why you would even publicize this. Just stop counting those users' votes, if that's what you want to do? Those user's votes don't matter, scaring the userbase into narrowing their overton windows of acceptable reddit voting is what matters. More broadly Reddit wants to be seen as taking action. The incentive structure facing that company rewards loudly making a slight improvement to the site over quietly making a huge improvement.
