I always wondered how this was supposed to work. The 'pusher plate' is going to have to be made of strong stuff. A nuclear explosion launched a steel cap to incredible speeds [1]
How would a spaceship handle effectively being shot with a similar device. It would be ripped apart (I'm not a physicist)

- sparker72678 6y agoThis gist is that by controlling the size of the explosion you control the energy, and thus can keep it within a range that the materials you're using can handle. I realize that's a hand-wavy statement, but a lot of actual research has gone into this, and it seems like it should work without exotic materials.
