Why do you think developers don't run Linux VMs on macOS laptops?

  They absolutely do. One reason is to get the same environment they get in a cloud deployment scaled down. Another is Apple keeps messing with compatibility, most recent example being the code signing thing slowing down script executions. Edit, this includes docker on Mac: it's not native.
