Whose latest GPU?
- dannyw 6y agoApple's. It's as powerful as a Radeon RX 5500M, which is incredible when you consider that the A13 is passively cooled and the RX 5500M is actively cooled. It's also 40% as powerful as the RTX 2080 Ti, the best-performing consumer GPU on the market, that draws hundreds of watts and very well cooled. By some quick maths, performance/watt is an order of magnitude better on the A13 than GPUs from AMD and NVIDIA.
- strictnein 6y ago> 40% as powerful as the RTX 2080 Ti Yeah... going to need to see the work on that one.
- dannyw 6y ago3DMark - Ice Storm Unlimited Graphics Score 1280x720 offscreen: Apple A13 Bionic: 208697 RTX 2080 Ti: 521458 https://www.notebookcheck.net/Apple-A13-Bionic-GPU.434833.0.html https://www.notebookcheck.net/Apple-A13-Bionic-GPU.434833.0.... https://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-RTX-2080-Ti-Desktop-Graphics-Card.386296.0.html https://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-RTX-2080-Ti-Des... Keep in mind the A12Z drives a 2732×2048 display, at 120Hz (iPad Pro). That is a beast to drive for the GPU. A 2080 Ti can do 4K at 80fps (Rise of the Tomb Raider). For another source, AnandTech says the A12Z is a Xbox One S class GPU: https://www.anandtech.com/show/13661/the-2018-apple-ipad-pro-11-inch-review/6 https://www.anandtech.com/show/13661/the-2018-apple-ipad-pro...
- govg 6y agoWouldn't a fairer comparison be at a higher resolution? At this resolution it's probably not the GPU that is a bottleneck for a system with a 2080Ti in it.
- strictnein 6y agoYou may want to check out those other benchmarks. Ex: GFXBench 3.0 - Manhattan Onscreen OGL on screen The GTX1070 beats it by 508%
- phaus 6y agoYea its not going to be 40% as powerful as a 2080TI when t comes to real world performance. It might do OK in special cases. Going from the links he posted it runs PUBG @ 40FPS and a mobile racing game at 30 FPS. Those numbers don't agree with the assertion that its as powerful as a mid-range desktop GPU.
- dispat0r 6y agoThe resolution is too low to compare. You need to be GPU limited to test GPU performance.
- 1_player 6y agoIndeed, my 2080 Ti is about 30% faster than my old GTX 1080 at 1080p, yet almost twice as fast at 4K resolutions. I don't have the exact numbers, YMMV
- xxs 6y agoLook, there are no unicorns and there is no magic. To get certain performance (fps) you'd need some power, even if the Apple stuff is twice more efficient (!) - it'd still draw like 50W+ or anywhere close to 40% of 2080TI.
- p1necone 6y agoJust driving regular UI stuff on a 4k screen is not hard - most low end notebook gpus can handle that easily. It's not comparable to running a modern 3d game at 4k.
- whywhywhywhy 6y ago>It's also 40% as powerful as the RTX 2080 Ti, the best-performing consumer GPU on the market, that draws hundreds of watts and very well cooled. Keep hearing these extremely bold claims about iPhone, iPad chips. But if they're truly that powerful why are we not filling compute farms with them? I mean the 2080 TI is $999 alone with just the card with much higher power and cooling requirements than the A13. or is none of this really true at all to real world performance.
- nojito 6y agoAre you going to really claim that the millions of iPads and iPhones out there aren’t the real world? Comparing to esoteric highly specialized workloads is not apple’s game.
- whywhywhywhy 6y agoIf you're going to compare it to a RTX 2080Ti then I'm going to compare it to the sort of professional work you would do with an RTX 2080Ti, not compare it to the millions of iPhones scrolling through Twitter feeds as a metric. So much grading on a curve going on with iOS devices.
- p1necone 6y agoExactly. As an analogy imagine if a car magazine compared a Lamborghini to a Toyota Corolla and said "the Lamborghini didn't take me down the road to the shops any faster than the Corolla, they're pretty much the same".
