- lioeters 6y ago> Today, 29 percent of Nigerian-Americans over the age of 25 hold a graduate degree, compared to 11 percent of the overall U.S. population, according to the Migrations Policy Institute > ..overt racism hasn’t stopped Nigerian-Americans from creating jobs, treating patients, teaching students and contributing to local communities in their new home, all while confidently emerging as one of the country’s most succesful immigrant communities, with a median household income of $62,351, compared to $57,617 nationally, as of 2015.

- chillacy 6y ago> And what about Nigerians who come to the U.S. and don’t succeed? Wey, the activist chef, says there’s a lot of pressure to fit a certain mold when you’re Nigerian. Choosing the right career is only one part of that. “You have to be heterosexual, you have to have children, you have to have all of those degrees,” he says of the cultural expectations he was raised with. “It limits the possibilities of what Nigerians can be.” Sounds like pretty common immigrant culture.
- ThA0x2 6y agoThe huge success of Nigerian-Americans is proof that "systemic racism" no longer exists.
- e40 6y agoThe huge success of Nigerian-Americans is proof that "systemic racism" no longer exists. Yes, the problem of racism is that easy to explain away. Sheesh. Have you not been paying attention the last few weeks? EDIT: and the fact that they came from a completely different culture from American Blacks... one where their ancestors were not enslaved (in this country) by the majority Whites... that plays no part, eh?
- jollofricepeas 6y agoExactly. How does attaining higher education and salary mean that healthcare disparities, underfunded inner-city schools, wage inequality, police brutality and lack of representation in corporate leadership does not exist for people of color? Do Nigerians make more than their white counterparts with the same title and salary? Do police choose to act with less violence to Nigerians than other people of color? Are doctors more attentive to Nigerian women when giving birth at hospitals than Black American women? Are the public schools that poor Nigerians attend equally as well funded as the schools in pre-dominantly white zip codes? Does the fact that there are a handful of Black American billionaires and many more millionaires mean that systemic racism does not exist or that they have been successful despite it? There are some 250 million Nigerians. It is the largest country in Africa by population. Sheer numbers alone demonstrate a minority of its citizens would excel despite the challenges faced in the US.
- ThA0x2 6y ago>Yes, the problem of racism is that easy to explain away. Sheesh. Have you not been paying attention the last few weeks? Yes, and all the statistics on police killings point to no systemic violence. >and the fact that they came from a completely different culture from American Blacks... one where their ancestors were not enslaved (in this country) by the majority Whites... that plays no part, eh? You just proved my point... Thanks? It has nothing to do with race and everything to do with culture.
- biscotti 6y agoThe most successful ethic groups are those that will integrate. Learn about your nation and your history & try to be the best they can be. The most successful ethnic groups consider themselves British or American for instance first and do not allow the peoples to be split into groups & weaponised by pressure groups & the media. The most successful ethnic minorities are not this demeaning label, they are my fellow countrymen, and we both regard each other as such first and foremost. The most successful ethnic group is shocked when they see the cancel culture and doxxing of the left and a nonsensical position that they do not see robustly or honestly defended by anyone and that validates heinous and unprovoked actions against a group. The most successful ethnic groups are horrified by social media’s lack of responsibility & overt attempts to control the narrative and at their promotion and protection of agitators and blue ticks & relegation and deletion of those that rally against destruction and attempt to stop this madness & affront to the west, to disengage those who have been coopted by influencers. Many of my friends are the most successful ethnic minorities & they are not a minority at all, they are one of us.
- jollofricepeas 6y agoThis is a good point. We need people who think of themselves as white to fully integrate. If only whites would learn the history of their country and stop holding on to relics like Confederate flags and statues of racist traitors to Our America. If only they would integrate and learn the history of slavery, genocide, Jim Crow, mass incarceration and white terrorism. If only they would learn about predatory lending, redlining, defunded schools and police brutality. If only they would make sure their ethnic peers with the same title and experience are paid the same as them. If only they would advocate to stop the substandard treatment and premature deaths of ethnic women at the hands of US doctors. If only they were concerned more about their countrymen than maximizing their income and shareholder value. If only those who are “white” would fully integrate and support their countrymen in kneeling, protesting, voting and reforming our country in the spirit of making a more perfect union. To integrate means to unite. Unity cannot happen with inaction and silence from those with privilege and power.
- jollofricepeas 6y agoI’m not exactly understanding why this is surprising. There are some 250+ million Nigerians. It is the largest country in Africa by population. Sheer numbers alone demonstrate a minority of its citizens would excel despite the long-standing discrimination issues in the US. It’s like being surprised that there are so many Chinese and Indian students at university. It’s like being surprised that there are a handful of Black American billionaires and many more millionaires. What is surprising? That these people continue to be hopeful despite America’s problems with healthcare disparities, wage inequality, police brutality, redlining, predatory lending and underfunded school systems that disproportionately affect them.
- alkibiades 6y agothis begs the question if nigerians who had no legacy of jim crow or slavery and are the most succesful ethnic group should be recipients of affirmative action
