I believe the original argument is about developer choice rather than consumer choice. (I'm not saying developer choice is not important, btw) And as a consumer I can already use PayPal, mobile phone or bank for AppStore payments in my area. Would be nice to see many more services there, for sure. Ironically, devs bypassing Apple would probably limit my choice: for instance, I can't pay my Netflix with Paypal, use my phone or bank IBAN. Just credit card (this is probably different in other countries however).
