It’s depressingly common. There was a police office last year who claimed a McDonald’s employee took a bite out of his sandwich before serving him. On investigation he suddenly “remembered” that he’d bitten it himself. There’ve been at least a couple of claims of coffee shops serving cops cups with “pigs” or similar written on them; all revealed fabrications when followed up on. In the last few weeks of protests many police unions have tweeted out hyperbolic descriptions of threats officers faced: claims of IEDs thrown at them, etc. The accompanying photos revealed the “IED” to be a simple house candle.
Police officers imagine themselves to be an oppressed group and frequently fabricate slights to support that narrative and attempt to highlight the lack of respect they claim to perceive. That these fabrications directly lower everyone’s respect is no small irony.
