Unless you're on a laptop most people have a monitor large enough to put the PDF reader on one half, effectively putting it into portrait mode. I mostly read technical books, so I'll have a terminal or something open on the other half so I can work through the exercises in the book on the same monitor. When I'm not working at a computer, I do prefer using my Ipad Pro for PDFs.
