My uncle worked in micron scale thin films deposition, “sputtering” as he called it, for 30 years. When that research and manufacturing literally evaporated (pun intended ;) in the 90s, where was a guy in his late 50s going to go? He was too old and channelized both in terms of knowledge and management style to successfully transplant. He made an effort to reinvent himself, but it was hard work requiring flexibility and patience, both of which he possessed in very short supply. Looooong retirement ensued.
