I have to say, I'm not sure how Apple can pull this off. Mac commercial software is pretty sparse and crappy as it is. I mean, if I can't run the apps I use on a daily basis there (Adobe stuff mostly), it's a complete non-starter. Introducing another arch is not going to help matters there. If they try to pull in software from e.g. iPad, that's also pretty crappy. How many note-taking apps does anyone really need? And besides what few good apps iPad has, they won't work all that well in the desktop context.
I guess we'll see soon enough. I doubt they're as naive as to believe that they can pull another massive arch switch without Jobs' reality distortion field, and without their current arch severely lagging (like it was in PPC->x86 transition).
- Closi 6y agoWell Adobe will definitely support the new architecture, it would be stupid for them not to. And additionally with the latest iPad becoming much closer to ‘Mac’ in terms of the browsing experience (eg with a touchpad) it makes total sense for Apple to start making some of their apps truly cross platform. Does the Spotify desktop app really need to be substantially different to the iPad app?
- m0zg 6y agoIt took them quite some time to start supporting Intel Mac last time.
