- calaphos 6y agoI started working like that after being work from home started rather aprubt a in March. The work laptop is a very slow windows machine but with remote - ssh to the office workstation the local environment does not matter. With some settings tweaks I could even convince it to do a remote session via a jumphost.
- mattmar96 6y agohttps://tilt.dev/ https://tilt.dev/ We recently got this setup running company wide. It is a headache to iron out all the kinks, but the reproducibility is great. Essentially each developer has their own Kubernetes cluster in the cloud. As you develop your code is r-sync'd across to the pod running the relevant compiler/server/etc. Again, a bit of a pain to get running but really powerful once its setup. We now have near carbon-copy deployments across prod, dev, local development, and (soon) even the CI. (I don't work for Tilt, just a fan of their product and vision)
- TechBro8615 6y agoYep. I moved to it when I got frustrated with the performance of docker on Mac (our stack also includes quite a number of containers). It was a great decision. I barely notice the difference, thanks to how seamless VSCode makes it. My laptop fans hardly ever spin anymore. And there’s no mental block to starting work or managing resources on my laptop, since I leave the dev box running 24/7 and it’s always there. I wouldn’t be exaggerating to say it was the single best decision I made for my productivity in the last year. Don’t underestimate the mental effects of your laptop heating up based on how much work you’re doing. It’s been great to have those things decoupled.
