LAPD has a $1.3 BILLION dollar annual budget.
That's beyond insane.
How many dodgy programs is it funding vs public safety policing as SHOULD be their core job duty?
I'd re-assign a large part of that money into actual human services that aren't about predating upon the LA populace.
- thephyber 6y agoIt's worth pointing out that the recent budget meeting where the LA budget committee listened to complaints for 8 hours, was passed unchanged. At this point, I'm starting to think we are no better than Russia's "managed democracy".
- casefields 6y agoLASD is $3.5 billion. You've also got CHP on the freeways. Another 40 cities in LA have their own police departments as well: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_enforcement_in_Los_Angeles_County https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_enforcement_in_Los_Angeles...
- Rebelgecko 6y agoTheir budget is only about $100k per employee. Considering how many cops are making $200k+, that's actually a lot lower than I would expect. In terms of both cops and $ per capita (or per square mile), LAPD is actually a lot leaner than most big city police departments (maybe partially offset by presence of CHP/LASD in certain domains) LAPD: $325 per resident per year Chicago PD: $667 per resident per year NYPD: $714 per resident per year
