FWIW DeltaChat uses email messages encrypted with AutoCrypt (a flavor of OpenPGP) and your contacts are simply emails you know. The first message will be unencrypted with OpenPGP setup info embedded in the body. If the other email client supports OpenPGP (or is DeltaChat) then further messages are returned encrypted.
Someone on HN said that this was the NSAs dream since they could collect metadata on people who were sending encrypted messages via the various leaky parts of email delivery, SMTP relays etc.
