Unfortunately, that's not very true for FreeBSD. Complex driver modules (e.g., virtualbox, graphics) get broken all the time by kernel API changes.
However you can replace FreeBSD with illumos -- it has a well defined DDI (device driver interface), an OpenSolaris legacy.
