I was accepted into a PhD program in Chemistry in the early 80's but decided to work as a programmer instead (and still do); I then thought about getting a PhD in Computer Science in the early 00's but a professor talked me out of it since it appeared that most of the jobs were in academia (right before Google started hiring them in droves). Oh well, two chances and no dice.
