Most of Google's ad money comes from the commercial searches, i.e., digital camera, diapers, etc. Those are the searches that advertisers bid on and people click Google ads.
A "non-commercial" search loses that entire opportunity.
So in short, IMO - madness.
- andrewstuart 16y agoNo reason not to have relevant commercial ads on non-commercial organic results.
- asanwal 16y agoSo if I search for "newborn diapers", I will get awesome non-commercial results about the history and science behind diapers from Wikipedia and sponsored ads to the right? And what about a blog with affiliate links? Is that commercial or not? While I know it's fashionable now to talk about Google's demise and craptastic results, this idea seems like a solution looking for a problem. Sorry to rain on el parade but just not feeling it.
- klapinat0r 16y agoIf by madness you imply there's no market for it, I'd disagree. However, the idea isn't new: http://blekko.com/ws/+/about http://blekko.com/ws/+/about
- asanwal 16y agoBlekko hasn't proven there is a market for it. They've got some interesting things going on, some good PR in tech circles and have raised some money but until they show revenue, profit and a sustainable business model, the decision on whether there is a real (or just imagined) market is TBD.
