The “open letter” signed by 1200 experts stating that protesting was no risk, except for protests against the lockdown itself, was also mind boggling in its audacity.
- mberning 6y agoRight. As if the virus has its own agency and cares why you are gathering.
- goatinaboat 6y agoWhat I don’t get is if the virus is so woke, why it was infecting people without their consent?
- robocat 6y ago"One in every 1,000 Black men and boys can expect to be killed by police in this country". If we presume average years of life lost per black person’s death is 50 years, then Covid is less deadly. To lower risk, black people could stay at home and wait for better times...
- mberning 6y agoThat is so stupid. There are some 40 million black folks in the US. Assume half are men. 20,000,000 divided by 1,000 is 20,000. The actual number of unarmed blacks killed by the police per year is generally 20 or less. Last year it was like 10. You can look it up on the Washington Post database.
- robocat 6y agoPerhaps you could rewrite that to avoid implying I am stupid? Your facts don’t affect the argument.
- dang 6y agoIf you continue to break the site guidelines we will ban you. https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html When disagreeing, please reply to the argument instead of calling names. "That is idiotic; 1 + 1 is 2, not 3" can be shortened to "1 + 1 is 2, not 3." Your comment would be fine without the first sentence.
- mberning 6y agoPlease do. If you could completely delete my account that would be even better.
- geomark 6y agoThose numbers seem to be vastly more than reported numbers of police killings. Whom are you quoting? Because I like to keep track of who makes such exaggerated claims.
- robocat 6y agoThis references the source data: https://theconversation.com/police-are-more-likely-to-kill-men-and-women-of-color-121158 https://theconversation.com/police-are-more-likely-to-kill-m... It says that between 2013 and 2018, about 96 in 100,000 (approx 1 in 1000) African American men were killed by police in the U.S. Death from Covid is also lifetime risk. It is a commonly reported statistic if you want to find other publications that say the same thing. Did you try googling for it — for example google: "1000 black men and boys" police
