Gmail ignoring a '.' character in the email address has resulted in some interesting situations for me. Someone registered for an Amazon account with a version of my email address that was only a '.' different from mine to use a gift card, so all of the email came to me. The number of places that let you register for an account without verifying the email address is huge.
