Everyone has a different definition of "liberal". In the US in particular, it tends to be used interchangeably with "left" (often in ways that wildly contradict the original meaning). I don't mind being called a liberal, but the fact that I don't even agree with your definition is a good example of why I tend not to label myself that way.
