My native tongue is neither Finnish nor English, but wouldn't "sisu" be translatable as "grit"?

  "Grit" is a good translation. English-speakers who try to translate the word usually try something like "courage" or "guts", which isn't quite right. "Sisu" is not really about daring; it's more about tenacity and capacity to endure hardship. "Grit" is better.
