Naming the product "Currents" definitely gives the impression that it is at least partially meant for discussing current events. There are so many other messaging and discussion platforms for organizations, it seems like Google is going with the "use this to discuss how our organization can take advantage of social trends" angle instead of just generalized discussion of projects. That's my impression anyway. Regardless it also sounds like a great tool for company gossip and office politics.
