This is all nonsense to me.
Trump said if you loot, you get shot. Isn't this how our society works?
If you steal you may end up getting shot.
People are trying to react as if he said "if you walk down the street you'll get shot".
Sensitive topic, I guess.
* EDIT:
The nonsense part is people calling Trump to be censored, like OP.
I am not condoning violence but I do think looting may lead to it, it's not too far from the truth.
I think the argument is that he wanted to cause violence with his comments, which could be true, but seems like an idiotic to argue over that.
What he said seems to be a fact, so I am not convinced he should be censored
- tibbydudeza 6y agoYes in a fascist society sure but the use of deadly force by the police is usually only when a life is in danger and not any property. Usually non lethal means are employed when the police are following SOP i.e teargas/water or a baton charge.
- CapricornNoble 6y agoExcept that "looting -> shooting" doesn't necessarily involve the police at all, because the American population is armed and, in many jurisdictions, empowered to use lethal force in certain circumstances. A few examples: https://www.startribune.com/man-shot-dead-outside-lake-street-pawnshop-during-unrest-is-identified/570865962/ https://www.startribune.com/man-shot-dead-outside-lake-stree... https://www.inquirer.com/news/philadelphia-protests-looting-gun-store-south-philly-shot-dead-20200602.html https://www.inquirer.com/news/philadelphia-protests-looting-... There's also the flip side, where determined and armed looters slay the innocent: https://edition.cnn.com/2020/06/03/us/david-dorn-st-louis-police-shot-trnd/index.html https://edition.cnn.com/2020/06/03/us/david-dorn-st-louis-po... At any rate, the President's tweet of "when the looting starts, the shooting starts" is an accurate statement, irrespective of the employment of the police, martial law, fascism, etc...
- pedro_hab 6y agoI don't see how protecting your property is fascist. I agree that a life is worth much more than any property, but stealing might lead to the death of the victim, so you are not just protecting property. They could use non lethal force, but it's not radical to think it could escalate. I think your comment sums it up, Trump needs to be censored in the pursue of societal change, which is a political statement. Should a platform be making political statements and have protection as if they are neutral?
- thrwaway69 6y agoHere's the clarification - https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1266434153932894208?s=19 https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/12664341539328942... (I don't have any opinions on above. Just putting it here)
- kemitchell 6y agoIn general, the death penalty does not apply to property crimes as such. In practice, the system executes convicted criminals almost exclusively for murder. And our Supreme Court has prohibited capital punishment even for appalling violent crimes, like adult rape. Police use-of-force policies---however otherwise flawed---limit deadly force. State laws vary as to when and how private citizens may defend themselves with deadly force. Property crime outside the home without immediate risk to life or safety is not a license to kill.
- pedro_hab 6y agoI don't think you understood my comment, I am not condoning death penalty, or the police using deadly force in situations where it is unnecessary. I am saying that Trump statements seem reasonable in what outcome we may have. Looting may escalate to shooting, the reactions to this statement seem too extreme to me.
- kemitchell 6y agoI believe I did understand your comment. Getting shot for looting is not how our society works.
- pedro_hab 6y agoBy bad for not being clear, but it is in fact how our society works. You may end up being shot while looting, it's a valid warning, and people did get shot. Looting it's a messy situation, may escalate to a fight with police or the store owners, its totally within logic someone could get shot. I am not american, nor do I live in the US, but I think the shop owner its 100% within his right to defend his property. I also made an edit to my top comment btw.
- coffeefirst 6y agoIt is not. Breaking windows does not provide a legal justification for deadly force. If he said "When the looting starts people committing crimes will be arrested" we wouldn't be having this conversation.
- pedro_hab 6y agoI understand that, but it's not false that looting may end up in shooting. What he said it's still true, it doesn't need to be censored. People looting might escalate into a fight with police and shooting may happen. I don't think looting justifies shooting, but I do think it may escalate to that, it's a messy situation. I think it's irresponsible to suggest looting shouldn't have consequences.
