- mgamache 6y agoI thought that was just to correct for the initial definition of a second which was inaccurate. - jandrese 6y agoLeap seconds can be affected by things like big volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. That's why they are defined "as needed" instead of at regular intervals, and why they are applied somewhat irregularly.
