Many of the comments seem to jump onto the "autopilot doesn't work, we told you so"-train. I think it is important to remember and be clear that no autopilot system will be 100% safe, nor is any human driver 100% safe. What is interesting is looking at statistics of how often these accidents happen, and comparing that statistic to human drivers.
There are other issues like the way we calculate statistics: for instance we shouldn't just calculate "miles driven with autopilot engaged", without looking at how it was disengaged, what would have happened if it wasn't disengaged at that time, whether that would lead to an accident, etc.
There are issues, yes, but some commenters are acting like they think that this accident is what happens every time there is an obstacle, and as if the autopilot does not have functional obstacle detection at all. This is not the case. This is an exception, a failure in the obstacle detection, not the rule. The fact that this news is getting so much traction is a testament to that. If the autopilot was not detecting any obstacles, we would have news articles like this every week.
