I think what OP is getting at is the inherent hypocrisy of our government implementing policies to severely limit emigration from impoverished nations desperately in need while encouraging fleeing citizens from Hong Kong to bring their economic resources here instead of losing them to China's authoritarian regime. We're preventing people trying to escape China's authoritarian rule from immigrating to the US while at the same time welcoming some of those people trying to escape China's authoritarian rule. What's the difference between the two? Politics and economics. If this were motivated by altruism all things would be equal.
