AG may prosecute telecommunication use to “participate in” or “encourage” riots
- curryst 6y agoI don't think this is particularly newsworthy, nor that it reflects poorly on the Trump administration. 18 U.S. Code § 2101, the relevant law, clearly stipulates: As used in this chapter, the term “to incite a riot”, or “to organize, promote, encourage, participate in, or carry on a riot”, includes, but is not limited to, urging or instigating other persons to riot, but shall not be deemed to mean the mere oral or written (1) advocacy of ideas or (2) expression of belief, not involving advocacy of any act or acts of violence or assertion of the rightness of, or the right to commit, any such act or acts. They aren't barring your freedom of speech. This isn't some obscure twist of a law, this is the intended usage of that law. There are plenty of legitimate things to criticize about the response, but this isn't one of them. It's also worth noting that this law is superceded by a state conviction/acquittal for rioting charges. You can't be charged under both state and federal law for it.
- spacemanmatt 6y agoThis administration hates the Constitution!!!
- NotSammyHagar 6y agoCan the administration try doing something useful instead of punitive, like say trying to help improve police training so it has less 'kill the public' in it? Maybe being less hostile to scary liberal things like keeping accurate statistics of police actions?
- rowawey 6y agoThere have been a number of anti-protest bills passed in numerous states: ND, SD, OK, and TN; and for consideration in WA, OR, and NC. Oh, and look at all the curfews imposed around the country on tens of millions of people. You can bet gathering in groups of more than 20 will be criminalized, as well as talking about the crimes these mafiosos of the police and government leadership have committed. The police are making the protestors' and rioters' points for them (I don't want to hear any more "bad apples" downplaying): - shooting pepperballs at people standing on their front porches - shooting pepperballs and beanbags at peoples' necks, risking killing them - shooting pepperballs and beanbags at peoples' eyes, causing permanent disfigurement and loss of eyesight - shooting pepperballs and beanbags at people running away - shooting pepperballs and beanbags at people who are not involved - shooting pepperballs and beanbags at journalists live on-air at point-blank range - arresting reporters while they are live, even CNN and even after CNN - brandishing and assaulting people by drawing their pistols and pointing them at peaceful people - slashing tires, breaking the windows, tazing, and dragging-out people just driving along - using obviously excessive force and immediately getting a pat on the back from their white shirt - using their vehicles as weapons, running people over - throwing a small woman into the curb, causing her to have a seizure and a concussion It's either revolution now or overt totalitarianism tomorrow. People must wake-up or there will be nothing left but a disgusting, feudal dictatorship.
