That's thankfully far out of distribution. Why doesn't Tesla get more slack for incidents like this? Uber had to shut down its self-driving lab for almost a year when one of its vehicles failed and killed a pedestrian.
- sukilot 6y agoBecause Uber hired a human driver that ran over a pedestrian while doing paperwork when they should have been driving. Tesla, for all of its overselling autopilot, didn't the tell these drivers to take naps and play video games while on autopilot.

- jcranmer 6y agoWhy should Tesla get any slack? This particular circumstance looks like it should be within the typical guidelines for Automatic Emergency Braking systems to detect and react to--the sorts of systems which can be found in consumer models of cars. Uber shut down its self-driving lab in part because the circumstances were such in the realm of "the car should be capable of handling it" that excess caution was warranted in figuring out why a very easy case was missed.
