The world is full of people that need help more than those in Hong Kong, the US admin motivation for help is purely to hurt China, and should not be framed as an act of good.
- CyberDildonics 6y agoIt doesn't look like it is about giving anyone money, just making it easier to come to the US.
- ngcc_hk 6y agoActually Hong Kong people is relatively ok In assets, if this is planned exit. The situation is it is not many HongKong people want to go, especially those in the fight. May be some need an exit, like the girl got rape in police station and ... The fight is about staying to have liberty here. For running we have at least 2m already emigrated before 1997. And I suspect we have another 2m got passport that can go. Not to mention 3m. American role is to provide threat not to move any further. You may be tricked chinese is peaceful. The empire was never. It expands until it was contained or surrounding races all under it. The conflict would not stop. It will at least cover Taiwan. Once that done, the pacific is in play. The whole region is in play. The claim to South China Sea would mean japan is in play as well. You look at the ambitious of this empire from virus investigation, human gene modification, space race, ... it would be a welcome if it is humane and just different way of life. But it is not. What American currently should be worried should be the 85,000 American here instead. If Hker got the killing like Tibet and jail/re-education etc., not sure how they will treat Americans. Like nazi, once they can (and police Abd fireman) call hker cockcoaches, there is no human they saw. It is like the old saying it is the Jews I do not care. when the first explicit violating international treaty is ok with the international community all could be in play ...

- weare138 6y agoI think what OP is getting at is the inherent hypocrisy of our government implementing policies to severely limit emigration from impoverished nations desperately in need while encouraging fleeing citizens from Hong Kong to bring their economic resources here instead of losing them to China's authoritarian regime. We're preventing people trying to escape China's authoritarian rule from immigrating to the US while at the same time welcoming some of those people trying to escape China's authoritarian rule. What's the difference between the two? Politics and economics. If this were motivated by altruism all things would be equal.
- digitaltrees 6y agoYou can introduce a second argument but that’s not what I was responding to. This nationalist surge will make America weaker, poorer and dumber over time. So you want to help Americans, help others in the world. Let them come hear, help them build their local economy and engage in trade. Want to hurt Americans, build walls, shut borders, trigger a reverse brain drain. Who cares whether part of the reason to help is self interest, it can at the same time be motivated by compassion. Let’s help each other. We will be stronger for it.
